Noise FAQs

Manassas Regional Airport is a publicly owned airport operated by the City of Manassas. The Airport is a department of the City and is overseen by an Airport Commission and managed by staff from the Airport Director’s Office. The Airport Commission is comprised of eight (8) members that are appointed and serve at the pleasure of Manassas City Council. Two (2) members are appointed by the Prince William County Board of Supervisors. The Airport Director’s Office and its divisions oversee and maintain the Airport on a daily basis.

Manassas Regional Airport is a federally obligated airport, which requires us to be open 24 hours a day to the flying public. We are also considered a Reliever airport for the Dulles International Airport(IAD) and are classified as a National General Aviation Airport.

The Airspace in and around Manassas Regional Airport is managed by the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), the Manassas Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) and the Potomac Consolidated Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON). While the airport does have a Federally staffed control tower, they only manage an airspace of 5 miles around the airport, below 2000 feet.

During 2023, Manassas Regional Airport had over 100,000 aircraft operations and over 400 based aircraft. A single aircraft operation is either one takeoff or one landing. The Airport averages 200 to 500 operations per day. With a mix of private owners, corporate businesses, flight schools and charter companies, the Airport contributes an estimated $375 Million annually to the local economy.

As a federally obligated airport, we are required to be open 24 hours a day to the flying public, in the same way public highways are open continuously.

There is no limit on the amount of operations allowed. However, there are restrictions on engine testing associated with aircraft maintenance from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

The Airport has implemented a Voluntary Noise Abatement Program, which consists of suggestions to pilots and airport users in order to be more neighborly. While this program is voluntary, we strongly encourage all pilots and tenants to adhere by the program.

The FAA does have minimum safe altitude standards. These are enforced by the FAA through their Flight Standards District Offices(FSDO).

The Washington FSDO can be contacted at (703) 230-7664, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

    • The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is dedicated to addressing aircraft noise complaints and inquiries from the public with efficiency and effectiveness. Our primary objective is to handle these concerns in a clear, consistent, and repeatable manner, ensuring a responsive approach that optimally utilizes FAA resources. To achieve this goal, we have established the Aviation Noise Complaint and Inquiry Response (ANCIR) Portal. This innovative platform serves as a central hub for the public to submit their concerns and inquiries related to aircraft noise.
